Water Baptism
Water baptism is one of the two sacraments of the church. Water baptism and communion are two actions Christ specifically asks His followers to participate in.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Water baptism signifies the Christ follower’s identification with Christ as God in His death, burial and resurrection. Romans 6:3-5.
Water Baptism is a public identification of a committing oneself to Christ, His teaching and His spirit in our lives.
The act of water baptism reinforces our choices and behaviours that support the witness of Christ’s spirit in us.
It is an act of obedience. Christ said Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all Nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
We are following Christ’s Example Matthew 3:13-15. During the ministry of John the Baptist, people were baptized as a public demonstration of their repentance and return to serving God. John baptized Christ in a public ceremony.
It follows the example and practice of the Christ followers from the first church to the present: Mark 16:15-16: Acts 2:36-41; Acts 8:36-39.
Baptism by immersion can be an affirmation of the act of infant baptism.
