7:30 pm Photography Group

Here’s a group description from Aaron Vanimere.

  • Meetings will be every other Monday at my apartment (#205, 11307-99 Ave) , starting at 7:30pm. My lovely wife has promised to provide us with wonderful baked goods.
  • Challenges will be alternating between a more straightforward, “technical” challenge and a more conceptual, “artistic” challenge. For example, one meeting we would learn a technical skill (HDR photography, shooting a subject in motion, what focus mode to use, etc.) and have a simple challenge to develop that skill. The next meeting would talk about a grander artistic concept, and follow with a more open-ended challenge (take a picture that represents ________, take a picture with a strong narrative, etc.). I’ll elaborate more on this, but it will eliminate the (sometimes daunting and vague) conceptual challenges from eliminating people from participating in the group. Also, with less conceptual challenges (one every 4 weeks), the artistic standard can stay fairly high.
  • I’ll be the leader, but in true egalitarian fashion, I won’t lead the instruction and/or challenge portion of every meeting. If you have an area of expertise that you would like to share on, let me know and I’ll be happy to fit you in. If people don’t volunteer, they will be called upon to share for the good of the group, again in true egalitarian fashion.
  • Photographers of all skill sets and camera models are welcome! I can pretty much guarantee that everyone will learn something. If anyone doesn’t have an SLR, and wants to use one I’m more than willing to lend out my Rebel or some of my film cameras for some of the challenges. Point-and-shooters are still welcome, though.
  • I’d like everyone to have a long term goal (think a year or so) that we can keep each other accountable on (I realize that phrase makes it sound like some sort of lame youth-group or Promise Keepers thing, I really couldn’t think of a better way to phrase it).
  • The group flickr account will be integrated more fully into the group experience than it was before. Those who live out of town or can’t make it to individual meetings will be strongly encouraged to still participate through flickr.
